Duchess of Nothing: Heather McGowan

Synopsis:

After leaving a suffocating marriage for her new lover Edmund, the narrator of Duchess of Nothing thinks that she has found her freedom, but she's still trapped by the routine of life and isolated by her lover's long absences. Her one source of entertainment is Edmund's seven-year-old brother who becomes her responsibility. Spending their days together, they wander the city as she tries to provide him with some kind of education. But when Edmund abandons them all together, their intense relationship becomes a necessity and she comes to realise how much she depends on the boy.

Clever, wry and emotionally vulnerable, the narrator of Heather McGowan's novel speaks with cutting honesty in a voice that's unique and utterly compelling.
