In a Bloomsbury Square: T. S. Eliot the Publisher :
Monday 14 September - December 2009
2009 marks the 80th anniversary of Faber and Faber, and this small exhibition at the British Library will examine T.S. Eliot’s work as a publisher with the company over a period of almost four decades.
Using original manuscripts, correspondence, artworks and sound recordings drawn from the British Library’s collections, as well as previously unseen material from the Faber Archive and the Eliot estate, the exhibition explores the ways in which Eliot nurtured and developed some of the most significant writers of the twentieth century, including James Joyce, W. H. Auden, Marianne Moore, David Jones, and Ted Hughes.
Shedding light on the various inter-relationships between his roles as publisher, editor and author, and exploring his belief in the wider social and cultural mission of publishing, this exhibition celebrates Eliot’s unparalleled influence on European literary modernism.
The exhibition will include manuscript material of T. S. Eliot that has never before been seen on public display, and the British Library is delighted to acknowledge the generous support and assistance of Mrs Eliot and the Estate.
