Course Level Guide

There is something for everyone at the Faber Academy, whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned writer or somewhere in between. To help you select the right course for your needs and abilities, this guide breaks down what the different levels mean, what the prerequisites for each level are and what students enrolled in the different levels can expect.

Starting Out

This is ideal for those who are curious about writing and have little to no prior experience in the field. There are no pre-requisite for these courses - all we ask is that you come with an open mind and a keenness to learn. We recommend our masterclasses and our intensive beginners’ courses for those new to writing.

Improving

These courses are ideal for those who have some experience in writing, either through academics or as a hobby and are looking for challenging courses to hone their writing skills further. These courses might run slightly longer on a full-time or part-time basis to help you maximise your learnings.

Advanced

These courses are ideal for seasoned writers who are serious about getting published. The tutors for these courses are published authors themselves and understand what it takes to make it in the world of publishing. Entry to these courses is on application-basis and writers may be asked to submit samples of their work-in-progrerss or a past project.

FAQs

Do you offer scholarships on any of your courses?

Yes. Throughout the year, we award free places on selected courses to writers who otherwise could not afford to attend. You can see which courses we currently have scholarship places available on, and details of how to apply, here.

How experienced do I need to be to take your courses?

Some of our courses are suitable for complete beginners, while others are more advanced. You'll find a level guide on all of the course pages, explaining whether that particular course is suitable for someone just starting out or if it's designed for someone building on existing skills.

Can I book one of your courses as a gift for someone?

Yes, absolutely! For any of our shorter and twelve-week courses, you can go ahead and book a place using your own details, then drop us a line at academy@faber.co.uk to let us know the name and email address of the person who'll be attending. If the course you're looking at is one of our more advanced, application-based ones, get in touch and we'll be able to advise.
